Wine cellar 1996 Château Latour à Pomerol Pomerol

Red/purple colour with a brownish tinge around the edge. The nose has a hint of burnt sugar, yeast, animal tones, leather, black tea tones and cherry. The fine cherry continues on the palate, combined with apple mint, sage and coffee. It is a medium-bodied wine with soft tannins and a creamy long finish. The elegance and silkiness make this wine stand out. Drink and enjoy until 2015. 90 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Château Gazin Pomerol

Ruby red with a delicate brownish tinge around the edge. The nose reveals sour cherry, blood orange, lovage, hints of leather, is delicately animalistic and lightly oxidative. On the palate, this wine features cherry, apple mint and coffee, is salty, spicy and earthy and has a fine long finish with a hint of violet. It has an impressive long finish, but is tannic.Wait until 2017 to 2022. 93 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Château Ausone Saint-Émilion

Deep garnet red with cherry red around the edge, this wine has aromas of rose hip and tar with a hint of Havana tobacco. On the palate, it reveals sour cherry, cherry and a delicate hint of blackberry. It is a full-bodied, tannic wine, which has an extremely long and creamy finish. It is a world-class wine that reveals its class on the palate; silky and lively; tannins still need to mature. Wait until 2015-2022. 96 points.

 

1996 Canon-la-Gaffelière Saint-Émilion

Ruby and cherry red with a delicate brownish tinge around the edge. Red currant, earthy and a hint of Havana tobacco on the nose, this wine reveals red cherry on the palate, is creamy, full-bodied, tannic and harmonious and has a long finish. After 10 minutes, the wine is rough on the palate and is unbalanced.

Wait until 2016-2020. 89 points.

 

1996 Smith Haut Lafitte Graves

Cherry red with ruby red hues and oaky aroma combined with a hint of chocolate and a modern style. The wine has flavours of herbal sweets and raspberries with a hint of sweet mocha. It a medium-bodied wine with silky tannins and a medium structure. The tannins are almost fully mature and the raspberry and hint of chocolate linger on the palate with a medium finish. Nice and silky, but a touch too much wood. Drink now until 2017. 85 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Haut-Brion Graves

Garnet red with cherry red around the edge. The nose reveals raspberries, blackberries and a hint of tobacco and the wine has flavours of raspberries, sage, rose hip and sour cherry. It is a full-bodied, tannic wine with a very long finish. At first, the wine is rustic, but changes into a softer, more approachable, if a little tannic, wine after 10 minutes in the glass. Wait until 2018-2028. 90 points. Higher rating possible when drunk at its peak.

 

1996 Pichon-Langueville Comtes de La Lalande Pauillac

Garnet red in colour with cherry red around the edge. The nose reveals raspberries and blackberries, is earthy and delicately animalistic with a hint of chocolate pralines. The wine has a spicy oak and lovely cherry flavour, is tannic and has a long finish and modern style, reminiscent of the New World, but a touch too much wood. Drink until 2019. 88 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Léoville Barton Saint Julien

Garnet red with a brownish tinge around the edge and a nose of rose hip, violet, cherry and tobacco with delicate animal tones. On the palate, this wine combines sour cherry and chocolate, and is earthy, rustic, tannic, full-bodied, and shows great length. Wine is powerful, closed; modern style, but provides little drinking pleasure. Wait until 2020-2032. 88 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Cos d’Estournel Saint-Estèphe

Purple/red in colour with a nose of creamy chocolate and note of blueberry and hint of leather. On the palate, it reveals cherry, sage, coconut and a hint of blueberry. It is a tannic, full-bodied wine with a lovely long and mineral finish. A world-class wine that has everything. Given a little time to merge the tannins, it will be a real pleasure. Wait until 2017-2032. 97 points. Probably 100 points when it reaches its peak. A must-buy!!!

 

1996 Sociando-Mallet Haut-Médoc

Ruby red turning cherry red at the rim. The nose reveals raspberries, blackberries and cigar box, while the flavour has an intense chocolate note, coffee, cherry and hint of sour cherry. It is a tannic and full-bodied wine with a sour cherry and mocha accent on the palate, with a silky, creamy and very long finish.

Heavenly and exquisite fragrance, tannic, silky and full of finesse on the palate. Bravo! Wait until 2018-2026. 93 points. 2 more points possible when it reaches its peak.

 

1996 Lafite Rothschild Pauillac

Deep garnet red colour with a firm core. There is a hint of cork in the nose and a background note of wood mixed with cherry, sage and dark chocolate. The wine has a cherry, sage, creamy and chocolaty flavour and dances full of finesse on the palate with a creamy, extremely long finish. A wine with 20 points if it weren’t for this wood tone! Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Gruaud Larose Saint Julien

Dark, ruby red colour with a brownish tinge at the edge and an animalistic, jasmine, earthy nose mixed with moss and a delicate note of violet. The wine has a sour cherry, earthy, cherry, salty and animalistic flavour, a medium structure, soft tannins, and is creamy on the palate with a long finish. Produced in the old style, you’ve just got to love it. It is extremely harmonious and has superb length on the palate. Drink now until 2016. 93 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Latour Rothschild Pauillac

Garnet red with a brownish tinge around the edge. The nose has a strong animal note and is lightly oxidative. Contact with the air brings through very fine tones of blueberries, precious woods and creamy chocolate. The wine has flavours of cherry, blueberry notes, apple balm, hints of chocolate, is full-bodied and extremely tannic. It is powerful, compact and long on the palate. It is a heavyweight of a wine and is very closed. Wait until 2018 to 2035. 92 points; if everything harmonises, a higher rating is possible. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Phélan Ségur Saint-Estèphe

Ruby red with a strong brownish tinge around the edge. The nose is creamy with yoghurt and beetroot and the wine has a sour cherry and milky taste. It is medium-bodied with a hint of tannins and leaves notes of chocolate, elderberry and a hint of tomato on the palate. Good length. Wine is unbalanced in the middle and lacks harmony. Very mature in colour but closed in taste, lacks charm and gives little drinking pleasure. Wait until 2018-2025. 87 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Pontet-Canet Pauillac

Deep garnet red with a firm core. The nose combines rock candy, burnt sugar, yeast and notes of creamy caramel and the wine has flavours of blueberries, cherry and a hint of creamy caramel. It is a full-bodied, tannic wine with a very high alcohol content and a long, lingering finish. Extracted wine, artificial, lingers long on the palate, but lacks harmony on the whole. Wait until 2025, although this will probably be of little benefit. 85 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Léoville Poyferré Saint Julien

Ruby red with a delicate brownish tinge around the edge. The nose reveals almond, mocha and spicy oak and the wine has flavours of cherry, sour cherry and a hint of chocolate. It is a full-bodied, tannic wine that lingers long on the palate. It has a very modern bouquet, but is tannic, closed and provides little drinking pleasure. Wait until 2018-2030. 90 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Mouton Rothschild Pauillac

Deep garnet red in colour with a nose of sour cherry, tobacco, mocha and hint of cherry. On the palate, it combines a delicate note of almond, cherry and a hint of sour cherry. The wine has a hint of tannins, is full-bodied and has an extremely long, creamy and silky finish. Bravo!!!

Drink and dream until 2025. This is an elegant, harmonious and multi-faceted wine with an excellent length. 96 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Grand-Puy-Lacoste Pauillac

Ruby red in colour with a delicate brownish tinge around the edge. The nose reveals cherry, damson plums, light coffee note and a strong hint of chocolate. The flavours combine cherry, sour cherry and spicy oak. The wine has strong tannins and a medium length finish. The wine has a touch too much wood, lacks harmony, is overloaded and provides little drinking pleasure. Wait until 2017-2027. 86 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Léoville-Las-Cases Saint Julien

Ruby red with a brownish tinge around the edge. The nose reveals cider vinegar, a hint of cherry and is very sweet. It has a leafy cherry taste and the acidity is very prominent. The wine is medium-bodied with soft tannins and medium finish. It is a wine dominated by acidity, but lacks harmony and finishes abruptly. Drink up. 80 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Pichon-Longueville Baron Pauillac

Garnet red in colour with a nose of cream, yeast and delicate cherry. The flavours reveal cherry, cream and a hint of chocolate. It is a medium-bodied, tannic wine with plenty of cherry on the palate and a good length on the finish. It will be an extremely elegant wine once the tannins have merged. Wait until 2018-2027. 90 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Montrose Saint-Estèphe

Deep garnet red colour with a firm core and delicate brownish tinge around the edge. The nose combines creamy chocolate, a delicate hint of blueberry, tea and mineral notes. The wine has flavours of raspberries, blackberries and notes of chocolate. It is a full-bodied, tannic wine with a long, mineral finish. This wine has a distinctive harmony, finesse, depth, elegance and excellent length. A must-buy! Drink now until 2032. 100 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Montrose Saint-Estèphe

Deep garnet red colour with a firm core and delicate brownish tinge around the edge. The nose combines creamy chocolate, a delicate hint of blueberry, tea and mineral notes. The wine has flavours of raspberries, blackberries and notes of chocolate. It is a full-bodied, tannic wine with a long, mineral finish. This wine has a distinctive harmony, finesse, depth, elegance and excellent length. A must-buy! Drink now until 2032. 100 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Ducru-Beaucaillou Saint Julien

Ruby red in colour with brownish hues. The nose reveals lilac, soya, red currant, cherry and animal tones. The flavour combines blueberries and delicate sour cherry and is creamy and salty. The wine is medium-bodied with soft tannins, creamy on the palate, lively, with a note of blueberry and a good length on the finish. This wine has reached its prime for drinking, is extremely harmonious and long. Enjoy until 2018. 93 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Margaux Margaux

Deep garnet red with a brownish tinge and an earthy, mossy nose mixed with sage and delicate cherry.

This wine has a note of elderberry and flavours of sage and cranberries, is meaty and has silky soft tannins and an extremely long finish. Its maturity is revealed in the bouquet. All in all, it is a very harmonious, creamy wine that finishes well. Drink and dream until 2017. 94 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1996 Lynch Bages Pauillac

Ruby red with a brownish tinge around the edge. The nose reveals moss, grass, soya and a note of elderberry. It combines flavours of mocha, soya and cherry. It is medium-bodied, earthy, creamy and lightly tannic on the palate. Very good length on the finish. The wine has developed in terms of aroma and taste. Wait until 2015-2020. 92 points. Tasted in April 2011.

 

1986 Léoville Barton Saint Julien magnum

Ruby red with many brownish hues. The nose reveals bread, lovage, sage and a nutty aroma and the wine has flavours of herbal sweets, sage and delicate cherry. It is a medium-bodied wine with soft tannins and a silky, balanced and very long finish. The wine has a slight bitterness in the middle but improves upon contact with the air, becomes softer and creamier and has an excellent length on the palate. Drink until 2014. 97 points. Tasted in April 2011.
